Quality Improvement Programme

QIP, commonly referred to as Quality Improvement Programme was launched in 1970 with an objective of upgrading the expertise and capability of faculty members of the AICTE approved Engineering Colleges in the country. The Programme; implemented and monitored by the National QIP Coordination Committee (NQCC) is funded through the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a statutory autonomous body of the Government of India. Under this scheme of QIP, only sponsored teachers are eligible for admission to either Masters or Doctoral Degree Programme, with an aim to imbibe in them the culture of research and better teaching capability by exposing them to the environment and training in premier institutions of technical education where the facilities, infrastructure and the faculty are of international standards. Admitted candidates are paid scholarship, in addition to the salary from the sponsoring colleges. Faculty members of National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the National Institutes of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) have also been trained under this programme. The scheme has further been extended to other disciplines as well, such as Management, Pharmacy, Architecture and Town Planning, Hotel Management and Catering Technology

There are three main activities under QIP serving the faculty of Degree-level Engineering Institutions:

  • Providing opportunities to faculty members to improve their qualifications by offering admissions to Masters and Ph.D degree programmes.
  • Organizing Short Term Courses.
  • Curriculum Development Cell activities which help to improve class room teaching and learning.

The eight major QIP centres at IITs and IISc undertake the above mentioned activities. A large number of faculty members from engineering institutions from all over the country have pursued Master and Ph. D degree programs under this scheme. Details of the admission procedure under QIP for M.Tech. and Ph.D. can be seen at QIP Admissions.

A number of short term courses have also been organized by major QIP centres for the benefit of the faculty members from Engineering Institutions. The courses have proved very popular and useful.

The Curriculum Development Cells set up at major QIP centres have improved the effectiveness of technical education in the country.
